The completely revised and enlarged edition of The Primary Health Worker, a standard teaching text and reference manual developed for use by community health workers and their trainers and supervisors. Apart from improvements in text design and illustrations, the new edition has been updated in keeping with practical knowledge gained during the extensive field use of the previous work. The book also incorporates new information acquired in large WHO-sponsored programmes for immunization and for the control of diarrhoeal disease. The most extensive part is a working guide set out in 52 training and reference units. In line with WHO policy on the use of essential drugs, the book advocates preventive and therapeutic treatments based on the use of only 26 medicines and drugs. The new edition also features more advice on ways to prevent diseases and to secure community support as ell as on what to do when confronted with either a community or an individual health problems, with a sanitation need, or with accidents and other common medical emergencies. The remaining sections present guidelines for the trainers of community health workers and for the preparation of local editions or adaptations
