A report on the health situation in the 23 countries and areas of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region during 1985-1990. The report has two parts. The first provides a detailed analysis of the main health-related trends, strategies, successes, and continuing problems identified during the reporting period. Achievements and setbacks are described within the context of the complex political tensions and economic issues resulting from the Regions position as the world's largest reservoir of oil. Pertinent statistical information on key indicators of health stews is presented in a series of tables. The first part also includes data on changing trends in mortality, morbidity, and disability, and a review of the region's most important diseases. The second part of the report profiles health conditions in each of the region's 23 countries and areas. Organized according to a common format, each country profile provides concise information on demographic and social factors, main causes of morbidity and mortality. the health care system, and the extent to which primary health care is provided, particularly to underserved populations
