The rapid growth of international air transport and the increasing volume of long-distance passenger travel during the post-war decades intensified the need for harmonized hygiene and sanitation standards to prevent the international spread of communicable diseases and protect travellers and aviation personnel from environmental health hazards. Developed within the framework of the International Health Regulations and in collaboration with international aviation organizations, this guide presents comprehensive technical and operational recommendations for maintaining sanitary conditions in airports and aircraft and for strengthening preventive public health measures in civil aviation. The publication examines a broad range of operational areas, including food hygiene, potable water supply, toilet and liquid waste disposal, aircraft interior cleaning, cargo handling and vector control in airports and aircraft. It outlines principles for the safe preparation, storage and transport of food and water, describes procedures for cleaning, disinfection and waste management, and details measures to prevent the spread of insects, rodents and other disease vectors associated with aviation.
