These WHO guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations on physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years of age, recognizing that these movement behaviours should be considered together across a 24-hour period to promote health and well-being. Developed through the WHO guideline development process using systematic reviews and the GRADE approach, the publication addresses a gap in previous WHO recommendations by defining the recommended duration of physical activity and sleep, as well as limits for sedentary screen time and periods of restraint for infants, toddlers and preschool children. Intended for policy-makers, health professionals, early childhood educators and other stakeholders, the guidelines support the development of national policies and programmes that promote healthy movement behaviours from early childhood. The document emphasizes the importance of establishing healthy habits early in life to support physical, cognitive and psychosocial development and to reduce the risk of overweight, obesity and noncommunicable diseases. It also outlines the evidence underpinning the recommendations, identifies implementation considerations, and contributes to the implementation of the WHO Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030 and the Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development framework.
