Abstract

Description

Various codes standardise fresh-state concrete characterisation via field testing. The most widely adopted characterisation measures overlook broader performance issues, including stability, and are therefore supplemented with subjective judgements. This work reviews qualitative and quantitative ap proaches and investigates concretes identically characterised using the current approach. Flowability measures of slump height are compared to yield stress and viscosity values obtained via 3D reconstruc tion and accelerometers embedded in field tests. Qualitative measures of stability, including the Visual Stability Index (VSI), are compared to digitally derived measures of circularity, paste separation and reflectivity. Digital tools deliver quantitative measures, facilitating robust fresh state characterisation.
