This publication provides a review of current knowledge on intrauterine and perinatal infections, their costs to maternal and infant health, and possibilities for prevention and control. Authored by experts in the fields of embryology, microbiology and epidemiology, the book features 13 reviews covering morphology, etiology, epidemiology, conventional and newer techniques for laboratory diagnosis, the cost-effectiveness of routine screening and the extent to which these infections account for congenital malformations, including intellectual disability. Information on viral and bacterial infections is complemented by sections devoted to chlamydiae, toxoplasmosis and urinary tract infections.
