Abstract: This article takes Odes 4.10 as a test case in order to make two points about ancient mirror images and lyric. My first point is the wide-ranging claim that we should consider temporality one of the key themes in our interpretation of mirror images in the ancient world: mirrors create instant and momentary images. My second point explores a comparative method for reading ancient mirror images and lyric: what do we see when we read ancient mirror images alongside modern writings on the theory of photography?
