This executive summary presents the key elements of updated WHO guidance on self-care interventions for health and well-being, developed in response to persistent gaps in access to essential services, health workforce shortages and increasing pressures on health systems. It outlines the role of individuals, families and communities in promoting health, preventing disease and managing care across the life course, within a people-centred framework grounded in human rights, gender equality and universal health coverage. The document introduces a conceptual framework that emphasizes the importance of a safe and supportive enabling environment to ensure appropriate access, use and integration of self-care interventions, and situates these approaches within primary health care and broader global health priorities. The summary synthesizes new and existing recommendations, good practice statements and key considerations across multiple health areas, including sexual and reproductive health, maternal and newborn care, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and digital health. It also addresses implementation considerations such as financing, regulation, training and population-specific needs, and highlights priorities for research, monitoring and future updates. Intended for policy-makers, programme managers, health workers and other stakeholders, it supports the adoption and scale-up of self-care approaches through a living guideline model that allows for continuous updating as new evidence emerges.
