This report summarizes a virtual roundtable held on 14 March 2024 by PATH, with co-sponsorship from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Malaria Programme and the Pan American Health Organization, to examine country experiences with subnational verification of malaria elimination. The meeting brought together representatives from Brazil, China, Indonesia, South Africa, WHO and PAHO to discuss the role of subnational verification in supporting malaria elimination efforts and preparing countries for eventual WHO certification of malaria elimination. The report outlines the objectives of the roundtable, key presentations and discussions, and the perspectives of participating countries. The document highlights how subnational verification can strengthen political commitment, create measurable milestones towards elimination, improve surveillance and documentation systems, and support the preparation of national certification dossiers. It describes approaches used by countries with different levels of experience in subnational verification and examines challenges related to sustaining malaria-free status, maintaining financing and political support, preventing re-establishment of transmission, addressing cross-border malaria risks, and engaging private-sector health providers. The report concludes that subnational verification can serve as a practical mechanism for advancing national malaria elimination goals while reinforcing programme capacity and accountability.
