This OECD–WHO briefing paper examines the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), emphasizing the importance of a One Health approach that integrates action across human, animal, plant and environmental health sectors. Prepared for the 2024 Italian G7 Presidency, the document reviews current evidence on the health and economic consequences of AMR, outlines international commitments and targets adopted through recent global initiatives, and highlights the critical contribution of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures to reducing resistant and susceptible infections. The analysis presents findings from OECD modelling on the expected impact of inaction and the potential benefits of implementing a package of coordinated AMR interventions. The paper also assesses the global status of IPC implementation, including progress and remaining gaps in G7 countries, and evaluates the health and economic returns associated with scaling up IPC strategies. A dedicated case study focuses on Italy, examining the burden of HAIs and AMR, current levels of compliance with WHO IPC minimum requirements, and priority areas for improvement. The findings indicate that strengthened IPC programmes can substantially reduce infection-related mortality, lower healthcare expenditure, improve productivity and contribute significantly to achieving global AMR reduction targets.
