dc.descriptionNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represent a global public health challenge, producing high premature mortality, morbidity and longstanding disability burden, particularly in the WHO European Region. The four main NCDs (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes) are the most frequent causes of premature death in the Region. These groups share common behavioural and biological risk factors, which makes them suitable for integrated prevention and control using cost-effective tools and approaches. Knowing the prevalence and distribution of risk factors in country populations is essential to inform health policy. The WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of NCDs is providing technical assistance for NCD surveillance to countries and territories in the Region. This publication summarizes the results of surveys conducted between 2013 and 2019, which showed very high prevalence of risk factors.
