This executive summary presents the World Health Organization’s recommendations on intrapartum care for a positive childbirth experience, bringing together new and existing WHO recommendations into a comprehensive, evidence-based guideline for the care of healthy pregnant women and their babies during labour and childbirth. It addresses the increasing medicalization of childbirth and promotes a woman-centred approach that recognizes childbirth as a physiological process while emphasizing respectful care, informed decision-making, emotional support and the achievement of a positive childbirth experience. The guideline is intended to inform national policies, clinical protocols and practice across diverse health-care settings and was developed using WHO guideline development procedures, systematic evidence reviews, and the GRADE and CERQual approaches. The document summarizes 56 recommendations covering care throughout labour and birth, the first, second and third stages of labour, immediate newborn care and care of the woman after birth.
