This document presents the third edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) malaria terminology, providing a standardized glossary of technical terms used in malaria surveillance, control, elimination and research. The update responds to the increasing proliferation and inconsistent use of malaria-related terms across scientific literature, technical reports and policy documents, which has led to confusion among researchers, programme managers and policy-makers. It consolidates and refines terminology through a systematic review process involving expert consultation, literature analysis and external feedback. The glossary includes updated definitions, explanatory notes and classifications of terms across key domains such as diagnosis and treatment, vector control, surveillance and elimination. It also identifies obsolete terms for archiving and addresses complex concepts, including the definition and classification of a “malaria case” in different programmatic contexts. This resource aims to ensure clarity, consistency and comparability in malaria-related communication and reporting, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making, programme implementation and global efforts towards malaria elimination and eradication.
