Description: Chemical safety is achieved by undertaking all activities involving chemicals in such a way as to ensure the safety of human health and the environment. Chemical safety has many scientific and technical components. Among these are toxicology and the process of chemical risk assessment that requires a detailed knowledge of exposure and of biological effects. In order to raise awareness and increase the knowledge on exposure and effects of chemicals, WHO-SEARO, in collaboration with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Capacity Building and Research in Environmental Health and Toxicology, established a chemical help desk The Chem HelpDesk. This is the report of the proceedings of the International Workshop to Strengthen Capabilities for Sound Chemicals Management in South-East Asia Region, the key objectives of which were to raise awareness on chemical safety, to strengthen the role of public health for the sound management of chemicals, and to promote the use of the Chem HelpDesk. Important aspects of this workshop were that it brought together practitioners and policy-makers from health and environment sectors to promote chemical safety and highlight chemical safety in the context of the International Health Regulations.
