This publication compiles practical clinical tools derived from existing WHO guidance to support the management of cholera patients in treatment facilities during outbreaks. Designed as a rapid-reference resource for health workers, it complements other WHO materials on the outpatient management of cholera and diarrhoeal diseases. The document provides standardized guidance for assessing dehydration, determining admission criteria and selecting appropriate treatment pathways based on the severity of dehydration. The toolkit includes a cholera patient treatment flowchart, detailed instructions for Plans A, B and C, and practical reference tables for oral and intravenous rehydration therapy. It covers the use of oral rehydration solution, Ringer’s lactate, zinc supplementation and antibiotics in specific patient groups, as well as monitoring requirements and management of complications such as hypoglycaemia. Additional resources include fluid calculation charts, guidance on maintaining hydration during treatment, and discharge assessment criteria. By presenting key clinical recommendations in a concise and accessible format, the publication aims to facilitate timely, consistent and effective case management of cholera in outbreak settings and contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality associated with severe dehydration.
