The control of many diseases and improved living conditions through out the world have contributed greatly to a longer lifespan for populations in many countries. This dramatic increase in the numbers of the elderly, otherwise known as the "greying of nations", is calling more attention to the health, social and economic needs of the elderly. This regional strategy in health care of the elderly is aimed at sensitizing and technically assisting countries in developing and implementing national programmes for the health care of their elderly populations. The strategy covers the decade 1992 to 2001 and includes specific country and intercountry activities
