Abstract
Description

Global health progress at the end of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) era and the transition to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for a comprehensive assessment of achievements, gaps and emerging challenges across populations and age groups. This report examines health trends between 2000 and 2015, analysing the impact of the MDGs while situating health within the broader, integrated framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It describes global and regional developments across major health domains and explores the economic, social and environmental determinants shaping population health throughout the life course. The publication reviews progress in areas such as maternal and child health, infectious diseases and access to essential services, while also addressing issues that received less attention under the MDGs, including noncommunicable diseases, mental health, injuries and environmental risks. It identifies key drivers of progress, including increased financing, scale-up of effective interventions and strengthened global partnerships, alongside persistent challenges related to health systems and equity. Building on this analysis, it outlines the scope and implications of the SDGs, emphasizing universal health coverage, intersectoral action and strengthened monitoring systems to support policy and strategic planning in the post-2015 health agenda.
