This web annex forms part of the WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis. Module 3: diagnosis – rapid diagnostics for tuberculosis detection and presents the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) evidence profiles that informed the guideline recommendations. It compiles structured assessments of the certainty of evidence and the balance of benefits and harms for rapid diagnostic technologies used to detect tuberculosis and drug resistance, including molecular assays, first-line and second-line line probe assays (FL-LPA and SL-LPA), and the lateral flow urine lipoarabinomannan (LF-LAM) assay. The annex summarizes evidence across a wide range of clinical questions and patient populations, including adults and children with pulmonary tuberculosis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis and HIV-associated disease. For each PICO question, it provides GRADE profiles describing study characteristics, risk of bias, inconsistency, indirectness, imprecision, effect estimates, certainty ratings and references supporting the evidence synthesis. Published in accordance with the WHO handbook for guideline development, the document enhances the transparency of the guideline development process by making the evidence appraisal underpinning WHO recommendations publicly available.
