This implementation guidance provides a framework for monitoring and reporting essential immunization catch-up activities within the context of the global Big Catch-Up initiative launched in response to declines in immunization coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed jointly by WHO and UNICEF, the document outlines strategies to identify and vaccinate children who missed routine immunizations, strengthen immunization systems and integrate catch-up vaccination into routine primary health-care services. It describes different vaccination delivery approaches, including routine immunization, periodic intensification of routine immunization activities and supplementary immunization activities, and explains the operational requirements for documenting and reporting delayed vaccine doses accurately. The publication presents country-level and global monitoring approaches, including recommended process and success indicators, methods for estimating catch-up coverage and the adaptation of existing immunization information systems and data collection tools. It also discusses the role of household surveys, rapid monitoring methodologies and behavioural and social drivers of vaccination in assessing programme performance and identifying barriers to vaccine uptake. The guidance emphasizes the importance of strengthening recording systems, home-based records and reporting practices to support sustainable catch-up vaccination and improve immunization equity.
