Abstract

Description

iv, 216 p.
This guidance document provides a set of practical tools to support the implementation of sanitary inspections for small drinking-water supplies, in line with the 2024 WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality: small water supplies. It responds to the need to strengthen proactive risk management in settings with limited monitoring capacity and updates earlier sanitary inspection approaches, emphasizing their role in identifying contamination risks and supporting safe water management . The document presents a series of standardized sanitary inspection packages covering a range of water supply types and contexts, including groundwater sources, surface water systems, distribution infrastructure and household practices. Each package includes an inspection form, a technical fact sheet and a management advice sheet, providing guidance on risk identification, system characteristics and corrective actions. It also outlines considerations for local adaptation, user training and integration into surveillance and water safety planning. Intended for health authorities, regulators, water suppliers and community actors, it supports consistent risk assessment and informs decision-making to improve the safety and sustainability of drinking-water services.
