This web annex describes the methodology used by the World Health Organization to compile and validate the global, regional and country estimates of disease burden and service coverage for hepatitis B and C presented in the Global hepatitis report 2024. Developed to support monitoring of progress towards the 2030 global health sector strategy targets, it outlines the processes used to collect, validate and analyse data from the 194 WHO Member States. The document explains the reporting framework, the prioritization of country-validated data, procedures for addressing data gaps, collaboration with technical partners and the role of the Data Collaborative for Hepatitis in strengthening estimation methods. The annex details the approaches used to generate point estimates and uncertainty intervals, including methods for aggregating country-level data into regional and global estimates while accounting for variation in data quality and population size. It also discusses limitations related to incomplete reporting, differences among data sources and the continued reliance on modelling for selected indicators.
