This epidemiological fact sheet presents the latest global and regional estimates on the HIV epidemic, based on UNAIDS/WHO estimates for 2023. It provides a statistical overview of the burden of HIV in 2022, including the estimated numbers of people living with HIV, new HIV infections and HIV-related deaths, together with progress towards the global 95–95–95 targets and the HIV testing, treatment and viral load suppression cascade. The publication highlights global trends since 2010 and summarizes the remaining gaps to achieving the 2025 targets established under the Global Health Sector Strategies on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections. The fact sheet also presents comparable epidemiological indicators for each WHO region, covering HIV prevalence, antiretroviral therapy coverage, viral load suppression, HIV incidence and HIV-related mortality. Regional comparisons are supported by figures illustrating progress towards global targets and by tables reporting estimates for 2010, 2021 and 2022. Intended as a concise statistical reference, the publication supports monitoring of the HIV epidemic and progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat through standardized global and regional surveillance data.
