Ensuring safe and effective contraceptive use is essential to reduce unintended pregnancies and improve reproductive health outcomes, particularly in settings where access to quality family planning services may be constrained. This web annex accompanies the fourth edition of the World Health Organization’s Selected practice recommendations for contraceptive use and provides detailed documentation of the evidence and methods underpinning updated recommendations, with a primary focus on interventions to ease interval intrauterine device placement. The document describes the processes used to identify, synthesize and assess evidence, including systematic reviews conducted using predefined PICO questions and multiple international databases, and the application of the GRADE approach to evaluate the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations. It outlines the role of the Guideline Development Group in prioritizing topics and interpreting findings through evidence-to-decision frameworks that incorporate clinical outcomes, values and preferences, feasibility and resource considerations. The annex presents detailed evidence summaries, rationale statements and GRADE tables for pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, highlighting areas of sufficient evidence and knowledge gaps.
