| dc.description | This systematic review examines whether trained lay providers should perform HIV testing and counselling services using HIV rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) as part of HIV testing services (HTS). Prepared to inform World Health Organization guideline development, the review assesses the effectiveness, quality and feasibility of task-sharing HIV testing from trained health professionals to trained lay providers. Using a predefined PICO framework, it synthesizes evidence from randomized and observational studies comparing HTS delivered by trained lay providers with services provided by trained health professionals, and evaluates outcomes including testing uptake, testing quality, diagnostic accuracy, linkage to care and adverse events. The publication describes the review methodology, including literature searches, study selection, risk-of-bias assessment and GRADE evaluation of the certainty of evidence. It also summarizes evidence on end users’ values and preferences, resource use and implementation feasibility across different settings. The findings indicate that trained lay providers can deliver high-quality HIV testing with accurate rapid diagnostic test results and may increase uptake of HIV testing services in some settings. The review provides the evidence base supporting WHO recommendations on task-sharing within HIV testing services. | |
