Abstract

Description

34 p.
This epidemiological update provides a global overview of the COVID-19 situation based on surveillance data reported to WHO through 15 September 2024. The report summarizes recent trends in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, test positivity, reported cases and deaths, hospitalizations, intensive care unit admissions, vaccination uptake, and the circulation of variants of interest and variants under monitoring. It presents data from integrated respiratory disease surveillance systems, genomic surveillance networks, wastewater monitoring, and national reporting mechanisms, highlighting changes observed during the reporting period and their regional distribution. The update describes a decline in global SARS-CoV-2 test positivity alongside increases in reported cases, deaths, hospitalizations, and ICU admissions in several settings. It reviews the prevalence and geographic spread of currently monitored variants, including JN.1, KP.3.1.1 and XEC, and summarizes available evidence regarding their public health implications. The document also outlines recent COVID-19 vaccination uptake and national vaccination policies, with particular attention to priority population groups. Regional overviews provide detailed epidemiological assessments across WHO regions. The report emphasizes the continuing importance of surveillance, reporting, variant tracking, vaccination of high-risk groups, and sustained public health capacities to monitor and respond to COVID-19.
