| dc.description | This report summarizes a WHO-convened scoping meeting held in Geneva in April 2023 to initiate the selection of indicators for monitoring the impact of extreme heat on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). Bringing together experts from maternal and child health, monitoring and evaluation, environmental epidemiology, thermal physiology and climate science, the meeting aimed to establish a multidisciplinary process for identifying priority indicators and defining approaches to heat-health early warning systems tailored to pregnant and postpartum women, newborns and young children. The report reviews current evidence on the health effects of extreme heat, existing monitoring systems, climate and meteorological indicators, and a conceptual framework describing pathways through which heat exposure may affect MNCH outcomes. Discussions focused on the identification of feasible, relevant and actionable indicators, the integration of health and meteorological data, and the need to leverage existing monitoring systems while addressing important evidence gaps. Participants highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration across sectors, expanding research and data sources, harmonizing methods, and developing consensus-based approaches for indicator selection and early warning thresholds. The report concludes with recommendations and next steps to support global efforts to monitor, understand and respond to the health impacts of extreme heat on MNCH populations. | |
