Abstract
Description
xiv, 64 p.
This publication presents the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) global standard for safe listening in video gameplay and esports. Developed in response to growing concern about hearing loss associated with prolonged exposure to loud recreational sound, the document provides guidance for manufacturers, software developers, governments and other stakeholders involved in video gameplay and esports environments. The standard addresses the rapid global expansion of video gaming and the increasing use of headphones, headsets and other audio peripherals, particularly among children and young people who may be vulnerable to unsafe listening practices. The document outlines recommended safe listening features for video gameplay devices and software titles, including sound exposure tracking, warning messages, volume control systems, headphone safety modes and customizable audio controls. It also provides guidance on textual warnings, hearing health information and implementation considerations for esports events. The recommendations are informed by available scientific evidence, stakeholder consultations and existing WHO–ITU safe listening initiatives. The standard aims to promote hearing protection and safer listening behaviours while preserving gameplay quality, accessibility and user experience.
