Five global diabetes targets have been developed to strengthen the prevention and control of diabetes. There are different approaches and data sources that can be used to measure progress against the diabetes targets within the WHO European Region. In England (United Kingdom), diabetes surveillance is largely provided through the National Diabetes Audit; this collects data from existing electronic health records across both primary and specialist care and covers almost the entire population with diagnosed diabetes to forma national diabetes registry.
