This literature review accompanies the WHO guidance HIV and adolescents: guidance for HIV testing and counselling and care for adolescents living with HIV and synthesizes qualitative evidence on the care, treatment values, preferences and attitudes of adolescents living with HIV. Conducted to inform the development of the WHO guideline, the review examines published and unpublished literature from 2008–2013 describing adolescents’ experiences of HIV services, their perceptions of care, and the factors influencing engagement across the continuum of HIV care. It outlines the review methodology, including search strategy, inclusion criteria and evidence selection, and identifies major themes relating to adolescent-centred HIV service delivery. The review explores five principal areas: confidentiality and disclosure, access to care, adherence to antiretroviral therapy, retention in care, and transition from paediatric to adult HIV services. Across these themes, it summarizes adolescents’ reported facilitators and barriers, highlighting the importance of confidential, youth-friendly services, supportive relationships with health-care providers, families and peers, effective communication, psychosocial support and empowerment. Persistent challenges include stigma and discrimination, inadequate privacy, poor provider communication, misinformation, limited adolescent-focused services, mental health concerns and structural barriers affecting access and continuity of care. The publication emphasizes the value of incorporating adolescents’ perspectives into the design and delivery of responsive HIV care and treatment services and into the accompanying WHO guidance.
