The publication of this volume is a significant event for the European Region of WHO. It is the first time that the Regional Director’s report appeared in this format which, it is hoped, will attract a wider readership. Hitherto, the report covered the period from 1 July to 30 June, but as a result of the reorganization of WHO’s reporting system, it became possible to start reporting on the Regional Office’s activities for successive calendar years. This report was tabled at the Twenty-ninth session of the Regional Committee for Europe, Helsinki, 11–15 September 1979.
