This article provides an overview of the global and regional status of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases in 2024, focusing on progress in preventive chemotherapy (PC) programmes reported by ministries of health to WHO. It outlines the public health importance of these neglected tropical diseases, the populations requiring treatment, and WHO-recommended control measures, including preventive chemotherapy, improved water, sanitation and hygiene, behavioural interventions and, for schistosomiasis, complementary environmental measures. The report summarizes implementation of PC by WHO region, treatment coverage among target populations, and progress towards the 2030 neglected tropical diseases roadmap targets. The report reviews regional achievements and remaining gaps in programme implementation, highlighting countries that reached or fell short of recommended coverage levels and describing progress towards elimination of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases as public health problems. It also outlines WHO guidance supporting verification of elimination targets, updates on countries preparing elimination dossiers, and the publication of new recommendations for the public health control of human strongyloidiasis through preventive chemotherapy.
