dc.descriptionThis web annex to the WHO guideline on the prevention and management of wasting and nutritional oedema (acute malnutrition) in infants and children under 5 years presents evidence on prognostic factors associated with mortality among infants at risk of poor growth and development. The document summarizes findings from studies examining individual child characteristics and social factors linked to inpatient and outpatient or community mortality, together with corresponding effect estimates and certainty of evidence assessments. The annex reviews anthropometric indicators and growth-related measures including length-for-age z-score, weight-for-age z-score, weight-for-length z-score and mid-upper-arm circumference, as well as birth weight, growth velocity and nutritional status at birth and at 2 months of age. It also examines selected social determinants, including maternal education, sex and socioeconomic status. For each prognostic factor, the document provides statistical associations, absolute effect estimates and plain language summaries describing whether factors are associated with increased or decreased mortality risk. The evidence presented is intended to support the development and implementation of WHO recommendations on acute malnutrition in infants and young children.
