Abstract

Description

World Hand Hygiene Day (WHHD) is WHO’s annual global campaign to promote the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to support improvements in infection prevention and control (IPC). This report evaluates the 2023 campaign, themed “Accelerate action together”, and examines its implementation, outputs, engagement and communication performance. Drawing primarily on official WHO analytics, the evaluation reviews campaign activities, including social media outreach, media coverage, website traffic, videos, newsletters and stakeholder engagement. It also describes the campaign’s theory of change, management processes, communication products and dissemination strategies designed to reach health workers, policy-makers, civil society organizations and other stakeholders. The report analyses the campaign’s reach and visibility across different platforms and countries, identifies strengths and limitations in engagement approaches, and reflects on factors influencing campaign performance. It highlights the continuing importance of hand hygiene as a key component of safe, quality health care and reviews lessons learned after 15 years of World Hand Hygiene Day. The publication concludes with recommendations to strengthen future campaigns, focusing on communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, campaign management, evaluation methods and the development of effective products to sustain global awareness and support for hand hygiene improvement.
