This web annex forms part of the WHO guideline Medical management of abortion and summarizes the evidence supporting recommendations on the timing of post-abortion contraception. It presents GRADE evidence profiles and supporting analyses comparing immediate versus delayed initiation of hormonal contraception following medical abortion, including contraceptive implants and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), as well as immediate versus delayed placement of intrauterine devices (IUDs). The document evaluates outcomes related to contraceptive effectiveness, completion of abortion, ongoing pregnancy, adverse events, bleeding, pain, acceptability and continuation of contraceptive use. The publication synthesizes findings from randomized controlled trials, reporting anticipated absolute and relative effects, certainty of the evidence using the GRADE approach, and accompanying forest plots for each comparison.
