These consolidated guidelines provide updated, evidence-informed recommendations on tuberculosis (TB) infection prevention and control (IPC) to support implementation of the WHO End TB Strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals. They replace the 2009 WHO policy on TB infection control and emphasize a comprehensive public health approach to preventing transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in health care and other high-risk settings. Rather than introducing a separate TB IPC programme, the guidance integrates TB-specific measures within broader IPC programmes and highlights the importance of implementing interventions as an integrated package based on the hierarchy of administrative controls, environmental controls and respiratory protection. Developed in accordance with the WHO handbook for guideline development and informed by systematic evidence reviews using the GRADE approach, the publication presents seven recommendations addressing triage, respiratory separation, prompt initiation of effective treatment, respiratory hygiene, upper-room germicidal ultraviolet systems, ventilation systems and particulate respirators within respiratory protection programmes. It also describes the core components of effective IPC programmes, outlines implementation considerations and research priorities, and provides web annexes containing the methodological framework, evidence summaries, evidence-to-decision tables and systematic reviews supporting the recommendations.
