This report summarizes the discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the sixth, seventh and eighth meetings of the World Health Organization Technical Advisory Group on Malaria Elimination and Certification (TAG-MEC), held in March, September and December 2024. The meetings focused on the review of national elimination reports and certification processes for Egypt, Georgia and Timor-Leste, as well as broader technical and policy issues related to malaria elimination and prevention of re-establishment of transmission. The report also addresses progress in countries participating in the Elimination-2025 initiative, regional certification approaches, surveillance requirements and updates to WHO guidance on malaria elimination and certification. The document presents recommendations concerning certification criteria, surveillance quality, entomological surveillance, vector control and preparedness for imported and zoonotic malaria. It reviews discussions on subnational verification of elimination, regional certification of the WHO European Region and the development of updated guidance for countries affected by zoonotic malaria species such as Plasmodium knowlesi. In addition, it summarizes findings from certification and pre-certification missions, assessments of recently certified malaria-free countries, and operational challenges related to data reporting, case classification and prevention of re-establishment. The report highlights the importance of political commitment, multisectoral collaboration, strong surveillance systems and sustained technical capacity in supporting malaria elimination efforts and certification processes worldwide.
