This update reviews the global epidemiological situation of dengue in 2024, summarizing recent trends in disease transmission, surveillance and regional distribution. It describes dengue as one of the fastest-growing mosquito-borne viral diseases worldwide and outlines the factors that have contributed to its expansion over recent decades, including rapid urbanization, inadequate water and waste management, increased population mobility and climate variability. The report also discusses the continuing challenges posed by underreporting, limited diagnostic capacity and frequent misdiagnosis, which hinder accurate estimation of disease burden. Current approaches to prevention and control, including integrated vector management, surveillance, vaccination, community engagement and early clinical management, are also described. The report documents unprecedented global dengue transmission in 2024, with the highest number of reported cases recorded to date and transmission occurring in more than 100 countries. It highlights marked regional differences in disease burden, with the Region of the Americas accounting for most reported cases, substantial transmission across Asia, increasing activity in the African Region, recurrent epidemics in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and limited autochthonous transmission in parts of Europe. The findings illustrate the continuing geographical expansion of dengue and emphasize the importance of sustained surveillance and integrated public health measures.
