Abstract

Description

28 p.
The COVID-19 Epidemiological Update: Edition 168 provides a global overview of the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 as of 26 May 2024. The report summarizes recent trends in reported cases, deaths, hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions, while highlighting the limitations of surveillance resulting from reduced testing, sequencing and reporting. It reviews the global distribution and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants of interest and variants under monitoring, including JN.1 and its descendant lineages, and presents updated information on PCR test positivity from integrated sentinel surveillance systems. The publication also includes regional epidemiological overviews and analyses of geographic variations in disease activity and severity. The report presents the latest global COVID-19 vaccination data for the first quarter of 2024, reflecting WHO’s updated approach to monitoring annual vaccine uptake, particularly among high-risk populations. It emphasizes the continued importance of maintaining surveillance systems, variant tracking, timely reporting, clinical care capacity and vaccination programmes as countries transition from emergency response to long-term COVID-19 management. The publication supports ongoing public health monitoring by providing standardized global and regional epidemiological data and analyses to inform decision-making.
