Abstract

Description

This public health round-up summarizes major health emergencies, disease outbreaks, health financing developments and global public health initiatives reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in late 2024. The report highlights the deteriorating health situation in the Syrian Arab Republic following renewed conflict and mass displacement, attacks on health facilities in Gaza, and the growing need for trauma care, rehabilitation and specialized services in Lebanon after recent hostilities. It also describes the continuing cholera outbreak in Yemen, the impact of attacks on civilian infrastructure, and WHO-supported emergency response activities, including medical supply deliveries, vaccination campaigns and humanitarian appeals. The article further reviews global health policy and system developments, including findings from WHO’s 2024 Global health expenditure report showing a decline in per capita government spending on health after the COVID-19 pandemic surge. Additional topics include progress and persistent regional disparities in drowning prevention, the inauguration of the WHO Academy in Lyon to strengthen public health workforce development, and upcoming global meetings on cancer, noncommunicable diseases and road safety. Together, the items provide an overview of current humanitarian, epidemiological and health system challenges, while highlighting ongoing international efforts to strengthen health services, emergency preparedness and public health capacity worldwide.
